LEG OVER
Chapter One: The Call
The soft rhythm of slow hip-hop played in the background as Denis stirred a pot in his modest kitchen. The aroma of freshly cooked stew filled the room, blending with distant environmental noises filtering through the open window. The ringing of his phone cut through the ambiance, and he wiped his hands on a kitchen towel before picking it up.
“Hello, Denis,” Miss Jegede’s cheerful voice greeted him.
“Good morning, ma,” Denis replied with a smile.
“How are you today?” she asked warmly.
“Very well, ma. I am good and happy,” he said.
“I’m happy too,” she continued, “and that’s why I’m calling to say thank you for your wonderful assistance during the last trip. We made it big because you gave your all to the work. The CEO is thrilled with our report.”
Denis’s chest swelled with pride. “Wow, I’m so happy right now.”
“You deserve it,” Miss Jegede said. “I owe you big, Denis. You’re a good man. I’m taking you out one of these days to show my gratitude.”
Denis chuckled. “Hmmm, this is good in my ears. I’ll chop your money, ma.”
“Chop it, please. Chop it, big head. Now, get out of my phone, thief!” she teased, her voice full of playful warmth. “But seriously, thank you. You’re a good man, and I see you becoming great in no time.”
“Amen,” Denis replied sincerely.
“Alright, have a nice weekend,” she said.
“You too, ma. Bye.”
As the call disconnected, Denis grinned. He tasted the stew and nodded approvingly. “Hmm, this food is delicious. Rachel will be wowed,” he said to himself.
From the doorway, Rachel’s voice rang out. “Young man, this aroma I’m perceiving no be here o. If this food no sweet, hmm.”
Denis turned to her with a laugh. “Don’t worry, you’ll like this one. Just sit down and let Bro Denis serve you, Sister Rachel.”
“Hmmm, biko, I don’t like that style o,” Rachel retorted. “Which one is Sister and Brother? Na so them dey start. Denis, call me my name, please. We’re not in the 1990s.”
Denis saluted playfully. “Yes, boss.”
“Who is your boss? I don’t know you, biko. Comot for here!” Rachel shot back, but her laughter betrayed her amusement.
Chapter Two: Unforeseen Trouble
The atmosphere was warm and light as Denis placed a plate of steaming food in front of Rachel. “Here is your food. Please, enjoy your meal,” he said.
Rachel smiled. “Thank you.”
Denis leaned back. “I should thank you for finally coming to say hi after I practically begged you.”
“Aww, it’s not like I wanted to stress you. It’s been a very busy period,” Rachel explained.
“I get it,” Denis replied.
The moment was interrupted by the sharp ring of Denis’s phone. He frowned, glancing at the screen. “Why is this oga calling me again?”
“Hmmm,” Rachel murmured, raising a brow.
“Sorry, I need to take this,” Denis said apologetically.
Rachel shrugged. “It’s your boss now.”
Denis answered, “Hello, ma.”
“Yes, Denis,” Miss Jegede began briskly. “I just got word that you refunded 75,000 naira to the accountant after the trip you led two weeks ago.”
“Yes, ma,” Denis confirmed.
“This is great. Thank you. You’re such a good person. Don’t worry; I’ll surprise you. So, where would you like to go for our hangout?”
Denis chuckled. “Anywhere, ma.”
“Hmmm, you’d better pick a place,” she said teasingly.
“You know me, anywhere is fine,” he replied.
“Okay. Enjoy your weekend. Bye.”
As the call ended, Rachel folded her arms, her expression unreadable. “Hmmm, na wa o.”
Denis looked at her curiously. “What is that?”
“You and this your boss… hmmm.”
Denis laughed. “She’s just grateful for having me on her team.”
Rachel raised a brow. “And that’s why she calls you big head and all sorts of names?”
Denis looked confused. “No, she didn’t call me big head.”
Rachel smirked. “She did earlier.”
“Oh, I didn’t even pick that up,” Denis admitted.
“Probably you’re used to it,” Rachel teased.
“She’s a playful woman. She means no harm,” Denis said.
The phone rang again, and Rachel sighed dramatically. “Guess your playful boss really wants to play today.”
Denis laughed. “Aunty, she’s not the one calling. It’s your friend.”
“My friend? Who?”
“You’ve started abi? How many of your friends do I know?” Denis quipped. “It’s Vera. Can I pick?”
Rachel waved him off. “If it’s more important.”
“Wait, this sounds like a trap. Maybe I should switch off my phone,” Denis joked.
Rachel shook her head. “It’s rude to have your phone out during a date like this.”
Denis relented. “Okay, I’m sorry. I’ll put it on airplane mode.”
The phone rang again, and Denis winced. “Oops, she’s calling again. Let it ring out, and I’ll switch it off immediately.”
Rachel smiled slyly. “Pick it.”
Denis hesitated. “No.”
“Serious. Pick it,” Rachel insisted.
“Hmm, okay,” Denis said, finally answering the call. “Hello?”
The tension grew as Vera’s accusations spilled over the line, turning what had started as a peaceful afternoon into a storm of misunderstandings and emotions. Rachel’s suspicions, fueled by Vera’s anger, ignited doubts about Denis’s integrity. The conversation unraveled, leaving Denis caught between loyalty to his friend Akin and the need to prove his innocence to Rachel.
Denis tried to explain, but Rachel was unconvinced. When she demanded he call Akin, Denis’s heart sank. The ensuing call only deepened the divide, as Rachel interpreted Akin’s casual tone as a sign of collusion.
Chapter Three: A Crossroads
Denis paced the room, torn between chasing after Rachel and answering Miss Jegede’s urgent call. Her words about an opportunity to manage their UK branch resonated in his mind, but Rachel’s absence left a hollow ache.
His phone buzzed again. It was Rachel. Hope surged in his chest as he answered. “Hello, Rachel.”
Her voice was cold. “You don’t love me. If you did, you’d have come after me. Enjoy yourself and your sugar mummy.”
The line went dead.
Denis sank onto the couch, his mind racing. Should he follow his career or fight for love? The choice loomed before him, heavy with consequence, and the answer was far from clear.
