TWO PIECES PART 3
PICK UP
Lighthearted to intense.
And then it happened.
Bella gasped, pulling away suddenly. “Dapo, what did we just do?”
Dapo’s eyes widened in realization. “Jesus… how did we get here?”
Tears welled up in Bella’s eyes. “Dapo, we… we ended up in sex.”
Dapo sat up, running a shaky hand through his hair. “What on earth came over us?”
Bella covered her mouth with trembling fingers. “Oh my God… Jesus, ha! I have disappointed you. Ha, God, I failed you. I am so sorry, Lord.”
Dapo turned away, his shoulders heaving. “God, we are sorry. We are so sorry. We ask for Your forgiveness, Lord. God, have mercy.”
Bella wept. “Oh no, my God. Why did I do this to You? Bella, you failed God, ha.”
Dapo’s voice broke as he whispered, “Mercy, Lord. God, have mercy.”
The room, once filled with laughter and love, now carried only the echoes of regret.
Chapter 11: The Aftermath
The air in the room was heavy with regret and guilt. Bella sat curled up on the couch, her hands gripping a pillow tightly as tears streamed down her face. Sharon paced the room, her expression a mixture of disappointment and frustration.
“My God, Bella! Why would you do this?” Sharon finally spoke, her voice laced with disappointment.
Bella sniffled, unable to meet her friend’s gaze. “I… I feel so stupid already, Sharon. I don’t know what came over me.”
Sharon shook her head. “And I warned you, Bella! I told you something about this guy didn’t sit well with me. But you wouldn’t listen. Now look! This is a big one.”
Bella let out a sob, wiping her tears with trembling fingers. “I know, I know. Please, forgive me. I’ve disappointed you.”
Sharon sighed and sat beside her, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. “Babe, this isn’t about me. Who am I not to forgive you? But it’s between you and God. You need to go back to Him and have a fresh start.”
Bella clasped her hands together, shutting her eyes tightly as more tears fell. “God, I am so sorry.”
A sudden thought struck Sharon, and she straightened. “Wait a minute.”
Bella looked at her with swollen eyes. “What?”
Sharon hesitated before asking the question. “Was it protected? Or…”
Bella’s breath hitched. She swallowed hard before whispering, “It was unprotected.”
Sharon’s eyes widened in horror. “Haaaa! Bella, are you insane?!”
Bella flinched at her tone. “How on earth would he have protection in his house, Sharon? He’s not that type. He’s a child of God.”
Sharon groaned, placing her hands on her head. “What are you even saying? Do you hear yourself?”
Bella furrowed her brows. “I don’t understand you.”
Sharon scoffed. “Oh, so you actually believe this was his first time?”
“Yes, it is! I’m sure of it,” Bella insisted, nodding vigorously.
Sharon gave her a pointed look. “You mean to tell me that a man who could take your virginity smoothly like that is doing it for the first time? Think, Bella. Think straight.”
Bella blinked rapidly, confusion settling in. “Wait… are you saying I could be pregnant already?”
Sharon inhaled sharply, choosing her words carefully. “Did he… you know… release inside you?”
Bella’s breath hitched. “How am I supposed to know?”
Sharon groaned in frustration. “Bella, this is nothing but stupidity!”
Bella clutched her chest as fresh panic set in. “Oh my God. What do we do now?”
Sharon stood abruptly. “We have to get you pills. Immediately.”
Bella gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. “Haaa! You mean I could already be pregnant?!”
“I’m not saying that,” Sharon said quickly. “But we need to be cautious. Just in case.”
Bella rocked back and forth, her body racked with fear and regret. “God, what have I done? What did I get myself into?” She sniffled and wiped her face. “Come to think of it, Sharon, there was nothing interesting about the sex. Just one sharp pain, and then… nothing. Is this what people celebrate? There was nothing exciting about it.”
Sharon exhaled and grabbed her purse. “Let me go to the pharmacy right away.”
Bella nodded, her fingers fidgeting with the hem of her shirt. “Okay, please. I’m sorry for dragging you into this mess.”
Sharon’s face softened. “Come on, shake it off. We have to be calm. We’ll take care of you first, then deal with everything else.”
Bella took a deep breath, then suddenly paused. “Wait a minute.”
Sharon turned, an eyebrow raised. “What is it now?”
Bella hesitated, then narrowed her eyes. “Have you been having sex? How do you know about pills?”
Sharon’s jaw dropped. “Are you sure you’re normal? Abi you wan collect wotowoto? Are you not 26 years old?!”
Bella quickly waved her hands in surrender. “I’m sorry!”
Sharon rolled her eyes and stormed out of the room.
Bella buried her face in her hands. “God, please have mercy on me.”
Chapter 12: The Crossroads
Bella sat in her room, trembling. Her hands clutched the edge of her dress as her heart pounded against her ribcage. Tears streamed down her face, blurring her vision. She had replayed the words in her head a hundred times, but they still felt unreal. Now, she had to say them out loud.
“Dapo… I am pregnant.”
Dapo’s face drained of color. He staggered back as if struck by an invisible force. “What did you say?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Bella sniffed, wiping her face with the back of her hand. “I said… I am pregnant.”
Dapo’s hands trembled as he ran them over his head. “Oh my God. Oh my God. What have I done? Is this how people get pregnant? Just like that?” His voice cracked, betraying the panic rising in his chest.
Bella let out a wretched sob. “This is a big shame on me. Ha! How could I have allowed this to happen?”
Dapo took a deep breath, his mind racing. “Babe, what do we do now?” His voice wavered with uncertainty.
Bella raised her head, eyes filled with determination. “We have to go and report ourselves to the pastorate.”
Dapo’s expression changed instantly. “No, babe. We can’t do that.”
Bella’s brows furrowed. “What do you mean, ‘we can’t’? That is the only option we have!”
Dapo shook his head vehemently. “This will cause a lot of damage to everything we’ve built—the reputation, our service in the church. It will bring so much shame, babe. We need to think this through.”
Bella’s eyes widened in disbelief. “Who cares about our reputation right now? This is our spiritual life at stake! We need to put things right with God.”
Dapo exhaled, his hands trembling. “No, we need to clear this first.”
Bella froze, then took a step back. “Wait… what are you insinuating? Abortion?”
Dapo avoided her gaze. “Babe, please, we just have to consider this. Let’s have a fresh start.”
Bella let out a strangled gasp. “My God, Dapo. This is getting scarier by the day!”
He reached out to hold her, but she pulled away. “Babe, we have to be strong together right now,” he pleaded.
She shook her head, wiping her tears away furiously. “I need to talk to Sharon first.”
“No!” Dapo’s voice was firm, almost desperate. “We can’t tell her. We’ll tell her and report to the pastorate after everything has been sorted.”
Bella looked at him, horrified. “What if I die?”
Dapo’s face twisted with frustration. “You won’t! I will get you a professional.”
Bella stepped back, her hands trembling. “A pro-what? Dapo, are you even the man I thought you were? How do you even know a professional?”
Dapo exhaled sharply, avoiding her gaze. “Babe, stop this. We can’t be doing this right now. We have to sort it out first and then we’ll sit down and talk.”
Bella wrapped her arms around herself, shivering as if caught in a cold storm. “Ha…”
Dapo tried to hold her shoulders. “Babe, put yourself together.”
She nodded absentmindedly, her breath coming in short, ragged gasps. “Okay… I will. Ha, Jesus!”
Dapo swallowed the lump in his throat. “Be strong, babe.”
Bella let out a shaky laugh, full of pain. “I will be strong… Ha, I will be strong.”
The air between them thickened with unsaid words, an unspoken battle of morality and fear waging in their hearts.
The weight of their choices hung heavily, as the solemn music playing from Bella’s speakers blended with the tension filling the room.
Chapter 13: The Confession
The tension in the room was thick, an invisible weight pressing against Bella’s chest as she sat on her bed, staring blankly at the walls. Sharon stood beside her, concern etched across her face.
“Babe, you can still manage to go for the sister’s conference. It’s just two days,” Sharon suggested gently, her voice laced with encouragement.
Bella shook her head. “Sharon, I can’t. People will know. I want the pastorate to hear it from me first, not through rumors. Dapo and I are going to see Pastor today.”
Sharon sighed, squeezing Bella’s hands. “Okay, be strong, dear. I’ll be praying for you.”
“Please don’t stop,” Bella whispered, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.
Sharon nodded. “Let’s pray.”
Both women bowed their heads as Sharon’s voice rose in supplication. “Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your love. Thank You for a time like this. I pray for strength for Your daughter. Help them as they embark on this journey to make things right. Grant them mercy and restore them, oh Lord, in Jesus’ mighty name.”
“Amen,” Bella whispered.
Sharon embraced her. “I love you.”
Bella held on tight. “Love you too.”
As Sharon left, the door clicked shut, leaving Bella in solitude once again. Almost immediately, her phone rang. She glanced at the screen—Brenda. Her heart pounded.
“Oh no,” she muttered. “I can’t pick your call until I clear this pregnancy…” Her fingers hovered over the decline button. “But if I don’t pick up, she might call Sharon. That would make things worse.”
She exhaled sharply. “Okay, Bella, it’s time to lie.” She steadied her voice and answered, forcing a smile that no one could see. “Hello, babe girl!”
“Bella, how are you?” Brenda’s voice was warm, familiar, and piercingly knowing.
“I’m fine! How are you? And how’s your husband?” Bella asked quickly, trying to sound natural.
“We’re doing fine,” Brenda responded, but her tone held something deeper. “And the others in the UK?”
Bella chuckled. “Clown, you’ve started again.”
Brenda didn’t laugh. “I just called to check on you, jor.”
“Thank you,” Bella said, suddenly wishing the call would end.
There was a pause. Then Brenda’s voice came softer, almost knowing. “Bella?”
“Yes?” Bella replied, a little too quickly.
“Is there something you want to tell me?”
Bella swallowed hard. “Nope.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes, I’m sure.”
Brenda sighed. “Okay. Just know you can talk to me anytime.”
Bella forced another smile. “Okay, sister. Thanks for the love.”
“All right, talk to you later.”
“Great.” The call ended. Bella let the phone fall onto the bed as she buried her face in her hands. “My God, I just lied again.” Her stomach twisted. Guilt gnawed at her insides.
A sharp knock on the door startled her.
“Who is that?” she called, her voice hoarse.
“It’s me, Dapo.”
“Come inside.”
Dapo stepped in, his expression unreadable. “How are you, dear?”
Bella let out a bitter laugh. “Should I tell you I’m fine?”
He sighed. “You will be fine. Let’s go. We have to do this today. I need to travel tomorrow to meet my uncle in Lagos.”
Bella’s gaze locked onto his. “Travel?”
“Yes. I want to tell him we’ll be seeing him next week.”
Bella exhaled slowly. “Okay.”
Dapo held out his hand. “Shall we?”
Bella hesitated for only a moment before nodding. “All right.” She stood up, her legs feeling like lead as they walked out the door, both knowing that the road ahead was about to change everything forever.
Chapter 14: A Cry for Help
The morning sunlight filtered through Samuel’s window, casting warm golden streaks across the neatly arranged room. He stretched his arms above his head, inhaling deeply, a grateful smile spreading across his face.
“What a beautiful morning,” he murmured. “Thank you, Jesus, for a sweet day like this.”
But even as he uttered the words, an old longing tugged at his heart. He exhaled slowly, sinking back into his bed.
“It would have just been sweeter with Bella by my side right now,” he mused, a wistful smile forming. He imagined waking up to her voice, a soft ‘Good morning, dear’ filling the quietness of his room.
His smile faded. “Well, it’s all your choice, Lord,” he whispered, rolling onto his side. “I choose to serve you, and I pray for Bella. Lord, keep her. Let your mercy prevail and make her the great woman you want her to be. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
He reached for his phone on the nightstand, his fingers hesitating over Bella’s contact. It had been so long since he last heard from her. The thought of calling her danced in his mind, but he shook his head.
“No, it’s not right… Just leave her, Samuel,” he muttered. “She’s fine.”
Just as he was about to set his phone down, the screen lit up. His heart skipped a beat when he saw the name flashing across it.
Bella.
His brows furrowed.
“What?” he whispered, stunned. “Bella is calling me?”
The timing was uncanny. He had just been thinking about her. His pulse quickened. Without a second thought, he swiped to answer.
“Hello?”
“Samuel…”
Something in her voice made his stomach drop. It was weak, almost a whisper. He shot upright in bed.
“Bella? What’s wrong?”
“Samuel, please… I’m dying.”
His breath caught in his throat. “What?”
“Please, come and help me,” she gasped. “I… I’m dying.”
A cold wave of fear crashed over him. He leaped from his bed, already searching for his car keys.
“Where are you?” he demanded.
“I’m home… please, come.”
“Okay, I’m on my way!”
Samuel ended the call and bolted out the door, his heart pounding against his ribcage. His mind raced as he jumped into his car, fumbling to start the ignition.
“Jesus, take over,” he prayed aloud, gripping the steering wheel. “What is going on?”
With one last glance at the road ahead, he pressed his foot hard against the accelerator, speeding towards Bella’s house, dreading whatever awaited him there.
Chapter 15: A Race Against Time
Samuel paced anxiously in the hospital hallway, his heart pounding against his ribs. The cold, sterile air carried the distant hum of machines and muffled voices of medical staff. He had barely caught his breath when the doctor finally emerged from the ward, his expression unreadable.
“Doctor, well done, sir,” Samuel greeted hurriedly. “How is she? What’s going on?”
The doctor eyed him carefully. “Who exactly are you to her?”
Samuel swallowed hard. “She’s my friend.”
The doctor’s brow furrowed. “Your girlfriend or just a friend?”
Samuel hesitated. “She’s everything to me, sir.”
The doctor scoffed, crossing his arms. “Really?”
“Yes, sir.”
“She is everything to you, and you endangered her life like that?”
Samuel’s stomach dropped. “What do you mean, sir?”
The doctor took a deep breath, his tone turning sharper. “Why did you consider abortion?”
Samuel’s eyes widened. “Abor… what?”
“You heard me.”
A chill ran down Samuel’s spine. “I’m confused. You mean she did an abortion?”
The doctor nodded, observing his reaction closely. “You’re not aware?”
Samuel shook his head furiously. “No, sir.”
The doctor sighed, rubbing his temples. “She didn’t tell you she was pregnant?”
Samuel felt like the ground was slipping beneath him. “No, sir.”
The doctor studied him for a moment before asking, “Then who exactly are you to her?”
Samuel exhaled shakily. “Okay, I’ll explain, sir. Bella is the younger sister of my friend’s wife. I had feelings for her, and we were in a relationship until about four or five months ago when she broke up with me. I haven’t spoken to her in a while. She only called me today, begging for help.”
The doctor sighed deeply, shaking his head. “Then why did she call you?”
Samuel shrugged helplessly. “I don’t know, sir. Doctor, please, is there something I should be scared of?”
The doctor’s expression turned grave. “She is in a very critical condition. The abortion was botched, and she’s suffering from severe internal bleeding. We need to operate immediately, or we might lose her.”
Samuel staggered back, gripping the wall for support. “What?!”
The doctor nodded solemnly. “Yes. You need to reach her family right away. The surgery will cost four hundred and fifty thousand naira.”
Samuel felt like he couldn’t breathe. “Ha!” he gasped, running a trembling hand over his face. He had never felt so helpless in his life.
The doctor placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. “You have to be very fast.”
Samuel’s mind raced. Where would he get that kind of money on such short notice? He had to act quickly—Bella’s life depended on it.
Swallowing the lump in his throat, he straightened up. “Okay, sir. I’ll be back.”
The doctor nodded. “Wish you luck.”
Samuel turned and bolted down the hallway, his heart hammering in his chest. There was no time to waste. Bella needed him—now more than ever.
Chapter 16: A Cry for Mercy
The atmosphere in the room was thick with tension. Brenda paced back and forth, her hands clenched into fists, her face etched with worry. The weight of the situation pressed heavily on her chest.
“Oh my God, what has this girl gotten herself into for crying out loud?” Brenda’s voice trembled with distress.
Kunle, her husband, reached out and gently grasped her hand, his grip firm but reassuring. “Babe, calm down,” he urged, his voice steady despite his own concern. “We just need to keep praying for her. Right now, all we need is mercy.”
Brenda exhaled sharply, shaking her head. “I am sure that boyfriend of hers ran away.”
Kunle sighed. “What do you expect? Leave that one for now. We need to focus on our own sister.”
The shrill ring of the phone shattered the tense silence. Brenda and Kunle exchanged a glance before he reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.
“Who is that?” Brenda asked urgently.
Kunle glanced at the screen. “Samuel is calling.”
“Please, pick up,” Brenda urged, her heart pounding.
Kunle swiped to answer. “Hello, Samuel.”
“Kunle, how far?” Samuel’s voice came through, slightly breathless. “Have you told her sister?”
Kunle looked at Brenda, who nodded anxiously. “Yes, I have. She’s here.”
Brenda snatched the phone from Kunle’s hand. “Samuel, thank you for standing in the gap for Bella. We are so grateful.”
Samuel sighed. “It’s nothing, Brenda. Right now, we just need to do what we can to help her. I have been able to raise a hundred thousand naira. How much can you guys raise?”
Kunle took the phone back. “Don’t worry, Samuel. In situations like this, doctors can’t be too rigid about money. Try to beat down the price, but we will send you five hundred thousand. Negotiate for the operation and use the rest to take care of whatever else she needs while healing up.”
A moment of silence passed before Samuel responded, his voice thick with emotion. “Okay, friend. Thank you.”
Kunle nodded, even though Samuel couldn’t see him. “Samuel…”
“Yes?”
“Thank you so much,” Kunle said sincerely.
Brenda leaned closer to the phone. “Thank you, my brother. You are far too kind.”
Samuel sighed again, but this time, there was a note of hope in his voice. “Let’s just thank God, my sister. Let’s keep praying. All is well.”
